Dark mode

Switch the preview to Dark to see your email as dark-mode readers get it, since some email clients change an email’s colours when the reader uses dark mode. To keep the whole email light in the Gmail app, turn on Keep light mode. For a layer whose colours must stay fixed, or should change in a specific way, set its dark colours yourself.

See it

In the preview window, switch to Dark. The preview applies your dark-mode overrides, so what you see is what a dark-mode reader gets from them.

Keep your email light in the Gmail app

The Gmail app changes an email’s colours when the reader uses dark mode. To keep your email the way you designed it, open the Properties tab and, in the Dark mode card, turn on Keep light mode. It’s off by default.

Gmail on the web doesn’t change an email’s colours, so this matters in the Gmail app on iPhone and Android.

It works alongside your layer dark colours. With both set, the Gmail app keeps the email light and Apple Mail shows the dark colours you set.

The preview can’t show what the Gmail app does. To check it, use Send test and open the email in the Gmail app with dark mode on.

Set a layer’s dark colours

Select the layer and, in the Customize tab’s Dark mode card, turn on Override colors in dark mode. Set the Fill and, where the layer has one, the Stroke. For a text layer, the fill is the text colour.

If the Dark mode card is missing

The layer is a photo or another raster image, or it has no fill, stroke or link of its own to override.

Where it applies

Use Send test to see the email in your readers’ clients. Overrides apply in clients that honour dark-mode styles; the tested clients are listed in Designing your email in Figma.
